I think Samurai X - Blood and Betrayal (forget the other 2) are the 4 episode mini series that follows him in the beginning...

Rourini Kenshin is the light hearted show I thought?

i don't think most people consider witchblade an anime as it was based on an american comic book... high quality animation, yes... but the japanese get very, very specific about what you can or can't refer to as anime and/or manga

Actually no, they don't; Otaku's get specific. Anime in Japan literately means animation, which can be anything. It's the English speaking countries that twisted that word to mean Japanese Animation, much like we twisted the word "he*tai" to mean pornographic animation. In Japan, "he*tai" just means "pervert", just like "Anime" is used for all forms of animation.

Besides, the Witchblade Anime and Comic are so very far different that they're pretty much related in name only. For instance, in the comics the Witchblade was created as the offspring of the Darkness and and the Angelus and the main character was a cop. The anime never even mentions the Darkness or Angelus.

EDIT: Seriously? "Hentaii" is censored? IT ISN'T EVEN A FREAKING CUSS WORD! I can say "pornographic" but not "hentaii"? A word that just means "pervert"? Wow, good to know the censors are completely directed towards the uniformed English speaker.

actually, not really, these days. whatever their animators' version of riaa is, severely limits what can be labeled as anime, and what is "animation" now-a-days... both in and out of japan.

it's rather depressing, as that Wolverine animation looks exactly like an anime, apparently has a very well done storyline... but they've been told they can't market it as an anime, since it didn't originate in japan. has to be labeled anything but anime.

I haven't heard a single thing about that and would be interested if you happen to have an article about it. The way you're saying it though sounds like you may be getting your wires crossed. It seems like the makers of the show couldn't market it as Anime around the world because it didn't originate in Japan, not that Japan didn't allow it to be labeled as Anime. Besides, people in Japan call animation either "anime" or "animeshon". It actually means any animation from anywhere, not just Japan.

not an article, but talking to one of the producers at a con a couple years ago, as well as the guy who voiced wolverine.. they were told that since it wasn't from japan, they were not allowed to say "i worked on the wolverine anime", they had to say "i worked on the wolverine animated show", or the studio could be sued by the guild/union/whatever the hell it is, based in japan.

wasn't a formal interview, just from various panel discussions, and talking to the guys while out in the hallways and such whenever i saw them. the official line is there is a group in japan who has declared that nothing made outside of japan can legally be considered an anime.

You may be surprised the number of things people "higher up" get wrong, they often times simply repeat what has been told to them by somebody else, without actually looking up the law/reg/policy etc. for themselves. Many things get passed off as "the standard" but only in word.. eventually making a misconception or such become the "new convention" despite the intent or design.
