Back then, a random joe didn't just casually hop up into orbit for a publicity stunt.

That said, he DID get the opportunity, and he -- as any clever businessman would -- wanted to make sure it served the interests of the game as well. What he did with the opportunity was an interesting publicity stunt, but the actual trip itself wasn't.
I as well miss TR... it remains to this day my favorite MMO. The game was amazingly fun (altho as people mentioned, it had its problem). The cloning system was amazing, the gameplay mechanics were innovative, the GMs were simply outstanding (I don't think anyone who was not active in the game could comprehend how much they were an active, vibrant force in the game), they are the only game -- MMO or not -- that I think got the whole scifi concept of biotechnology down correctly, and the 'occupation battles' for the various forts and waystations were something I have never encountered in any game before or after. Only Rift's region-wide events even come close to that level of immersiveness for me.
And they actually got the mechanics of a sniper down properly. I will give props to Defiance, they got it down almost as well, and certainly better than any other MMO I've seen since TR.
But I think one of the best aspects of TR was its community. I have yet to encounter any MMO community that was that....
good. With precious few exceptions, they were legitimately helpful, friendly, non-insulting, mature... almost scary nice sometimes. As someone mentioned before, when the GMs were giving out freebies one time, the players actually organized themselves, unbidden, into a queue to receive their stuff in an orderly fashion.
And lastly, for those that might remember... "Jesus Beam? What's a Jesus Beam?" (moments later in chat) "Oh god no why did I ask ahhhhhh"
