The hopping is a silly and failed mechanic. Obviously movement and accuracy were attempted to be a factor, since you are slowed when looking down your scope.

The hopping style combat is 1) bad compared to games like Tribes and even Halo and 2) bad because it heavily favors some weapon styles over others.

It is funny that posters say the people who want to see the bunny hopping gone are noobs who can't aim, when most of the hopping players are the ones who seldom aim down their sights.

Bottom line is that shooting while in the air should have some drawback.

if it was actually auto-aim, you wouldn't have put the word 'essentially' in front of it.

trololol argue the semantics all you want, all you have to do is put the crosshair in the general vicinity of the target and they home in. Imagine putting a sniper bullet in the general vicinity of someone's head and having it automatically register a headshot. Keep trollin bro!

bunny hopping is lame. turbo lame. but aside from calling it stupid i don't believe it should be 'nerfed' or anything. it's bound to happen in any game in which your toon has 6+ feet of vert. ppl even try bunny hopping in cod. not so effective there.

Something NEEDS to be done. This can not go on because it is, for the lack of a better word, ruining part of the game for a part of the player base.

The "suggestion" of "aim up" is invalid because the height you have to aim at to reliably hit a hopper is twice the height of a person. There's an easy 1.5m clearance on a jumping person and the ground. Not to mention that certain weapons are practically unaffected by this "tactic" aim-wise making them together into an effective, annoying and arguably overpowered mix in close quarters.
And since every single objective has you go close to something you are, in effect fighting close quarters ALL the time. Meaning the argument of "oh don't go close then" is invalid.

There are many things that add up to this being the most annoying and unbalancing thing in PvP. Some of which I mentioned. And there NEED to be limitations, downsides. The most optimal one that pops to my head is not some sort of 2 second timer. You want to hop, go hop to your hearts content but you sacrifice offensive capability for it. I can completely accept and even encourage hopping as a defensive "tactic". But ONLY as a defensive one. This means that you shouldn't be able to fire your weapons while in the middle of a jump.

I can already hear the veins bursting in foreheads.

EDIT: as for the justification that "If Halo/Quake can do bunnyhop, so can you!" is... wrong. Those games have a very small pool of weapons. Very small, and VERY DETAILED. There are no modifiers. Every number, every single point of damage has been calculated, drawn out and examined. In Defiance, however, you have a very large pool of weapons with very different effects and damage ratings and so on and so forth. With a lot of it left up to the players themselves to combine. The results can vary, a lot. Weapons themselves are undefined. Again, I bring the nano fragger. That apparently is supposed to be a sawed of shotgun type weapon and instead you usually have a railgun that fires explosive shells.
your kinda reversing your case. you say that its ok in halo cause it has a small numbers of wepaons why woulnd't it be ok in a game with a alrge number of wepaons. you need to be defensive. I haven't seen 1 good reason for not allowing people to jump.

I don't see a problem with allowing them to jump. I just have a problem that the people usually using this tactic are those that also using weapons that dont need to be aimed properly; detonators, launchers, bmgs, infectors, occasionally shotguns. The game just punishes ADS and precision to much.

most games punish ADS. thats why in halo most people no scope and CoD invented the "quick scope: having to ADS slows you down. rarelt when playing halo do i use a scope. the reason is it puts you at a disadvanatge. I have no issue with people wanting the game to be sniperesque and wansting to use ARs and pistols but for teh msot part doing so puts you at a disadvanatge. people feel good about sniping. and its fun, this sin't the game for it. if you want to snipe play a game like halo, they have a game mode called "team snipers" and eveyrone has just snipers and unlimited ammo. then you can snipe all you want. You can do it in this game but its not effective
