That's the point of the survivalist loadout : he doesn't run into things, he stays back
I (and some other alpha testers) play with a sniper riffle without any problems as primary weapons. You won't see us go Rambo, for sure
What I mean is high DPS in this game doesn't mean much. What matters is your aim skill. Got uber DPS but can't aim ? You're as good as dead

That's why you have cloak. Put a few points into cloak and it recharges in about 30 seconds, if they don't go down switch to your backup (I use three round burst AR or a nice EMC magnum pistol) after you land the first shot.

If you can consistently crit from cloak with the right build you don't need high DPS since damn near everything shy of elites die in one to three hits. Besides, snipers are a support class designed to provide overwatch, take key targets of opportunity and soften the enemies; not necessarily be lone death machines and fling rounds everywhere.

Solid advice. If you go with the survivalist, you should indeed play that way. When you pick your EGO power, don't go with two separate ones. Choose Cloak, and then one of its sub-powers. I think one of the first ones that unlocks is extra critical damage when crouched. Considering you should crouch when you snipe - not just for aesthetics, but it makes you harder to detect/hit - you will be one-shotting everything but the mission bosses. And from maximum range, anything that survives your first shot should be dead before they can get close enough to you to do real damage.

Thanks for the info guys. What mission gives you an AR or something along those lines?

There are a few assault rifles you can get through the main story mission and there is one at the end of the Episode mission set. You can also venture to various vendors after a few story missions in distance(or just drive to them ) and get a basic AR then too. Try not to get hung up on aesthetically wanting a specific weapon too.

They actually drop randomly, but fairly often. If you don't want to wait for one to drop, the vendor at the base camp sells them. You get to the base camp once you end the tutorial. But again, of all the weapon drops I've had, ARs have by far been the most frequent.
On a side note, I hope the "Vendor Specials" remain in the final release, because you get some pretty cool weapons for very good prices.

This part kills me. The only AR I wanted to use was the alien tech one. It was the first weapon drop I got, but have since not been able to find a higher level one anywhere, not even the stores. I don't like using the ARs, but I really want to fully slot one of those.

but in the end - it doesnt matter what you choose.

Use what ever weapon you want (drops, lockboxes, quest rewards) and chosoe what ever perks you want (you can choose the main skill during the tutorial).

I took survivalist i think - used snipers alot, at aroudn 100 ego... meh using Light machien gun, biomagnetig gun thingy, granade launcher and got a sniper + gun also in inventory (all use diff ammo).

For the last 2 months almost in Alpha and as well the beta's I always pick survivalist and use sniper rifles for many missions as one of the main weapons(manual bolt not semi auto/repeater) and prefer the syphon proc for the added proc chance of more damage plus health. At the beginning missions I have few issues and usually try to grab a vot auto shotgun or the like with a syphon or shock proc if I can once I've gotten a bit farther in missions as my second primary weapon to compliment the sniper rifle. Eventually I switch it out for a nade or rocket launcher.

I also take the overcharge for a more offensive consideration and build around shield ammo and then extra drops later from explosions in this set same progressional consideration.

For arkfalls I dont typically use the sniper rifle except on some boss fight situations. I tend instead to switch the loadout to use other weapons that better cater to more aoe or dot damage respectively.

I'd never give up having the sniper rifle to start. I love distance shooting mobs way too much.

I really enjoy sniping too, but I started out with Decoy because I like that Ego power the most.
The only thing I find nearly impossible to deal with are those big blue guys, because both the pistol and the sniper rifle barely scratch them. Not having a weapon where you can just unload a huge amount of damage is kind of bad there.
