are we really fighting for good?

    are we?

I was playing the angel island coop mission, and psycho pete says 'I don't come into your home and kill your friends and family' and he has a very good point. he didn't, yet we have to go and kill hundreds of his friends, and then kill his mother. wtf?

when we're running around the docks, killing all the raiders in sight, does anyone consider that they may have a family, and they're just a work, docking the boats and whatknot, then BOOM! dead.

has anyone else questioned the morals of this game?

Who ever said we were fighting for good? We're Ark Hunters - we fight for the money! Just because many of our current jobs may be termed *good* by some outside observer doesn't mean anything. They are just the jobs we have been paid for!

Hellbugs are a nuisance to everyone (see Parraba Farm, Happy Pow Farms, Diablo Station, etc.), you don't try to protect the rabbits destroying your crops, you kill them.

Raiders kill who they want and take what they want, no one would have a problem with you killing them.

Yeah, about that... Apparently we're also really crappy at negotiating contracts, given that we get paid very little, have to beg to buy weapons from our employer, and otherwise have very little to spend what little we earn on.

Honestly, as career paths go, Ark Hunting could use some serious work.

About the only way it makes any sense at all is if you're an indentured servant and EGO is really your jailor.

    A really, really annoying jailor.

Which makes a depressing amount of sense, really. Who would willingly let Navi II be injected into their brain?

In any event, as far as the question of fighting for good... If you work for a guy who's nickname is "Death's Merchant", moral good probably isn't high on your list of employment requirements.

To be fair, he does claim that he is trying to 'fix the world'. If Tony Stark is allowed a second chance, then so is Von Bach. Although Von Bach seems to fit better as Staines...

they built farms on they're homeland. I would attack in retaliation, wouldn't you?
happy pow farms? there are no happy pow there. they're kept in a fenced area.
diablo station was built on they're home.

Hellbugs are universally viewed as vermin by all right minded sentients,so yeah wiping them out is good for everyone.

As for raiders (and psycopathic miners) , they are happy to kill & maim innocent folks, so i feel pretty good when i wipe them all out.

Ark hunting as a job sucks..bad pay, lousy hours etc.. but you do get to 'regulate' paradise,so not all bad

Although even there it's pretty clear his reason for wanting to do this is so that he can be seen as its savior.

Granted, how you factor in Von Bach's clearly selfish intent in the overall moral calculus is a matter of personal philosophical bent, but generally from a story trope point of view -- and Defiance is nothing if not a savage abuser of tropes -- wanting to do something good for naught save personal glory almost always results in evil as an end result.

The gods do love turning hubris to irony, after all.

Of course it is quite possible that Von Bach sold us, as The Ark Hunter (silent, deadly, poorly paid, what a combo) on his plan to save the world and we really are along out of pure intent, either having failed to notice or overtly ignoring our employer's egocentrism in favor of the overall good we hope to do for the world in general.
