I bought this game to see how well an MMO of this scale could work on consoles. I know that there have been others but I wanted to see for myself before Elder Scrolls Online comes out as I believe this will port on to consoles too.

That is the one good thing about this game. No subscription no need to play it more than you want. Nothing about this game really expects me to come back. When new content hits I play it and go away again. Anymore with no end game content there is just nothing to do really. Course I already paid for my dlc but maybe this is how they intended the game so servers remain low thus upkeep costs less? How much you want to bet we are actually on borrowed Rift servers?
What you're actually thinking of is an RPG.
Since most MMO are MMORPG, most people have made the same assumptions. Barring the engaging story - which many MMORPG lack anyway, all of these points you have listed are the elements of off-line RPG games (not counting, of course, end-game content, since they aren't designed for repeated end-game farming).
All an MMO really means, is lots of people in a persistent world, but, to many, including you, the term MMO seems to instantly mean grinding, farming, auction halls and progression. It's unfortunate that so many assumed and expected this to be the case with Defiance, and are disappointed as a result.
Your Challenger won't drive? You're probably in the passenger seat.
Can't sell/delete an item? Check all of your loadouts, it's likely still equipped.
Auction house? Why? It'll just render bits purchased lock boxes pointless, and weapons are mostly equal anyway.
Gear/enemy progression? No thanks, it'll only render 90% of the content trivial when you reach the highest zone.

I wasn't duped they never said it was an RPG in anyway it was a Shooter MMO. Can you explain what you were lead to believe and how?
