The OP made opinioned statement about what a “MMO” means. It’s a good question to ask. Is just having an environment where other people are in a sufficient definition, or is effective communications a necessary ingredient for any game to call itself a MMO? I’m talking about the social aspect and why communications is the only way to have it. Do we have the necessary ingredients, effective communications, for this game to call itself a MMO of any type at all? Is it even wanted? If not, then what is the advantage of there being lots of other people in the game with you?

    1. Agreed
    2. Not gonna happen. They'd pretty much have to scrap the game and start over from scratch with a whole new design philosophy. Or I suppose they could always just tack it on as an afterthought and make the game even more of a mess
    3. Well they've already got sieges planned. I wish they'd get around to actually implementing them though.

Ok my error but why would over a million subscribe if they didn't have the game? I doubt that many people register just to troll the forums.

There were probably a lot of people who signed up long before the game came out and then just lost interest or forgot about this game and never actually bought it.

Since there is so much speculation to what a "MMO" truly is, why doesn't someone find some official definition to void this thread of confusion? C:

Wikipedia sums it up quite well (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive..._online_game):

A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet. Many games have at least one persistent world, however others just have large numbers of players competing at once in one form or another without any lasting effect to the world at all. These games can be played on any platform, be it the personal computer, a game console such as the internet capable PSP, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, PS Vita or Wii, or mobile devices and smartphones based on such operating systems as Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many video game genres.

I guess some people missed it. I know I did, but the topic is over 100 posts long now too.

So what do people think? Does that Wikipedia definition indicate that it's not really a MMO unless people can act together cooperatively? Or is it still a MMO if they can not do so because they can not communicate effectively?
