Just my take on Defiance from alpha now to beta

There's a bunch of stuff I could say and give you a lengthy wall of text of a review that no one will read so I'll just say this: stay skeptical. Honestly, I had such high hopes for the game and when I got invited to alpha I was elated. So for an entire weekend I played it through, and by the time I had practically gone through everything(made it to San Fran) I had to back up and reconsider just how good this game could turn out. I'm sure for a console game/console gamers, this game will probably be a new experience and is really awesome. But from the perspective of your average MMO player, this game literally offers nothing. There are two races(for now, not sure if thats final count at launch or if the rest are dlc), 4 roles, and only 1 progression path through the game. Its a hardcore themepark through and through, and its very limited on content. The world seems static and lacking any depth, and virtually every optional mission is a collection quest. I know that's standard fare for a themepark, but Trion could've definitely made a better effort. All in all the game just seems lacking any real soul or content, and its downright insulting that they're offering a dlc season pass for a game classified as an mmo, although this game is an mmo in the loosest definition of the word. It has a great premise and the T.V ty-in seems like a really interesting cross- media opportunity, but I can't see this game really registering on MMO player's radar. The one good thing I can say without reservation is that the shooting is good. Its fun and fluid and is the best part of the game, well the only part of the game really but Defiance does it well. I had really high hopes for the game when it was first announced, assuming that it would be in line with Fallen Earth(silly me). At this point, the best Trion could do is delay it, for like.....2 years and give it some actual content and depth but I know that ain't happening. Anyway that's just my take, if you enjoy the game-great! Have a good time and I hope the game is everything you could've hoped for.

Building depth in the game is also based on the cooperative story with the television series. Given they've announced 5 sets of DLC which will be adding to the game later, I'm sure we will see more races/specialties/etc. The game has decent flavor for launch and once both the game and show have time to progress it seems they have a lot of room to grow. I've been playing through the betas and updates, and I've noticed plenty of changes making the game better which had to be community feedback as it is. In order for things to be changed for the better, they are going to continue to need feedback as opposed to people leaving/avoiding.

Some of the characters are paper thin, and the scripting isn't the best, but I'm heavily enjoying the gameplay. One of the things that gets me is that our own characters have no dialog. I think that would add a lot to the cinematics which I've started skipping through because I hate feeling like a mute.

When it comes to MMOs, it's always going to be "to each their own," but this finally feels like something I can enjoy off and on over a longer period of time and doesn't seem to adorn the MUST BE FIRST of the standard fantasy MMOs.

By wall of text I was referring to the posts that require you to actually scroll down to read, although yes I did go off a bit there.

I'm glad I had a chance to Play the Beta. The game offers now new and if anything has some of the most awkward mechanics I've dealt with. I won't be going ahead with my preorder.

Walls of text are hard to read. Paragraphs and such are your friend.

As for content of Defiance upon release, we cannot disclose any information judging by alpha. This is due to the varying degrees of changes that is made during alpha tests for any game.

What you see in alpha must remain in alpha because a lot of things may not make it into release. Thus, judging a game by content found in an alpha test phase of a game is literally like judging a book solely by it's cover picture.

For future reference, Alpha for Defiance is still under NDA restrictions. Beta no longer has the NDA. Therefore, any information pertaining to content found in alpha is not to be discussed and/or disclosed in public without proper authorization.

For a game that doesn't require you to maintain a subscription to play, I'm honestly happy with what I've seen. I'm going to look at this game just like I would look at a game like CoD (in terms of being same-cost to my personal budget). I'll buy it, play it pretty thoroughly for the first few weeks with my friends and then come back to its sparingly after I've gotten tired of it.

If they were to require a subscription fee, then I would look at it differently, but in my opinion the $60 price tag is well worth it.

After last weeks alpha streaming on twitch.tv, pretty much everything is public knowledge. Now, I do not feel the need to talk about what transpired in alpha or even pull content from the alpha forums, but I feel no constraint to talk about the current state and content of alpha. Which would be pretty stupid any way because they are practically identical except for the switched off areas and contracts.

So anyone interested in what else is coming in two weeks can look up the alpha streams.

I am still on the fence but will probably pre-order it. Even if it is just to say thank you for letting me into alpha/beta which I enjoyed.

@PsychoticHamster The two races we have at launch, one more via DLC this season, afaik. And seriously, paragraphs please!

You are basing your opinion of the game on alpha and beta. That is all.
