The biggest advantage of pre-ordering through steam is hopefully the inclusion of the Steam Overlay. This game is terrible for alt-tabbing and the steam overlay function would at least let me get access to a web browser or see my friends' chats without having to alt tab and minimize the game constantly.

If there is no steam overlay then that'd be a shame

What kind of problem are you having with alt-tabbing? I've been alt-tabbing between the game and the forums just fine.

Once in a while it was freeze at the desktop and not minimize all the way, had it happen a few times.

Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

Non-Steam games can be added to the Steam library too. Thus you can use the Steam overlay even if you didn't buy the game on Steam.

However, Steam has achievements and tracks gameplay hours and I'm seeing that as an advantage over the standalone version. You can't have those if you add a non-Steam game to the Steam library.

The "Steam Powered" title aside (which I would never use), the 5 inventory slots has a value of around $1.30? You can just buy inventory expansions in the cash-shop after.

And the A-Tex Growler quad.. you get one of those for free as a mission reward just outside the tutorial. On top of that, any pre-orders (regardless of retailer) receive the Charger, which (in my opinion) is much cooler, faster, and more useful than the quad.

Those Steam rewards are pretty lame. :/ Tier 3 sounds more interesting, but I don't see them getting there in time. And dropping Rift in as the Tier 2 reward was a mistake, in my opinion.

This post explains the steam situation perfect, thank you.

I believe if they had done this there would have been a lot more people preordering through Steam.

I'm not so sure I view that underlined bit as an advantage. Maybe as data for your parents/friends/significant other to beat you over the head with.

I'm wondering what the preload times will be on the different digital order retailers (Steam, Amazon, GMG, Trion, etc).

It's an advantage simply because in 2020 I can look at the hours and be like "omgz i waz a prö. i ownz n00b"
