Some use a pyro grenade. I used a cluster shot, I ignored smacking them and then shooting them. Then after I completed the mission, I saw the video where a player hid up by Jack Leg, so he could shoot the smelters in the back when they spawned.
Just no. It is very easy to kill the little bastards but you just need to use something that doesn't do too much damage per bullet. I killed a couple and quickly realised I should switch from my shotgun to something else.
If you ever do finish this mission and get to the final mission, "Defiance", don't come back and say "it's impossible" either. Look, learn, adapt. And failing that use the search function.
And it's Jackleg Joe, not Bootleg Jack.
Use a combat shotgun...before you all go "Dafuq? " I found that a blast from a combat shottie aimed above the head of the smelter will hit the tank even from the front because the tank sticks above the mobs head slightly and even if you do hit the mobs head you wont kill it because it is on the edge of the blast. The last time I did bootleg jack I used bolt action for when his shield was down to get a couple of good head hits and combat shotgun for the flamers and jack when it gets to phase 3.
just let them come for you as they go to flame attack quickly run behind them and put a shot in their back, it was a pretty easy mission, it only took about 2 cycles to get him to jump down then once he is on the floor he couldn't be any easier if they tried.
don't let the other people get you down I can't do it either. I either ignore the other miners and get shot up by them, pay attention to the other miners and still got grenade by Jack during the second phase. The devs should at least tweak it be first instead of having you start all over again if you make it to a cut scene, have you start there. ands second have Jack start grenade only after you finish with the Smelters. also not everybody has healthy hands. Mine have been deformed by Extreme Athritis. I can still play ok but Button masing and hectic scenes ala Jack's Boss fight are a little out of my League
Firstly its Jackleg Joe and secondly use an assault rifle with overcharge so when his shields go down you can hit him from the back of the room behind one of the tanks so the other enemies don't attack you. When he jumps down, use grenades and a shotgun and keep running circles around him.
Simple hide in the corner... prefer bottom right... the range attackers will not argo to you if they do quick snipe when flamer comes cloak jump on box and then shoot the flambaggers backpack....
That was the easy part... insane part is the actual boss when he get's soo pissed he jumps down
It's kinda funny this game's ai is weak, range combat (sub, assault rifles) never run up to you for melee... they always stand at a distance which makes it insanely easy to avoid fire...

You can do it. Its not as hectic as it seems. As a matter of fact, its one of the most kickback battles of the game, I'm not kidding. Read my guide and you'll understand why. In phase 1 you'll probably get bored and impatient because nobody bothers you. Phase 2 almost nobody bothers you except the smelters. Give 'em a smack with your 'F' key. When they fall down, shoot them. You can obviously play the game and if you got to Jackleg Joe, then you have the skills already. Swarms of mutants, 99ers and hellbugs are harder than this, really. The actually Jackleg Joe battle was easy.....
After dieing 10 times and nearly snapping my keyboard in half (still working fully) i noticed something....
At first... he doesn't even want to kill you if you don't shoot at him (the woman on the balcony is shooting him aka drawing his argo) hmm that is interesting....
Now like a idiot he walks right up to her close enough to kiss her boots.... boom cloak and walk all the way to the other side where the flambergers spawn... quickly duck behind a box and look... shield runs out and he doesn't even turn to you... busy kissing her boots i guess...
Shoot him 3.... 4 times... not even a reaction.... must love them boots a lot.... emptied a mag... he looks pissed... he is coming for me and shooting... barely he made it barely passed the first set of boxes before i cloaked again........ i looked stood in awestruck in the middle of the last row of boxes waiting for the sweet deaths embrace.... as i saw him stop in the middle.... turning around and attacking the woman... or kissing her boots....
I kept doing what i was doing emptying mags and cloaking cackling like a mad man.... then all i had heard was click... click click click of an empty chamber mag... my previous gun's ammo wasted on the event before... seeing the ammo box smack dab on the right side of the middle area.... oh god my shield isn't full (did not invest in any shield upgrades)... i need ammo i can taste it i can taste the victory and blood... is it mine or his o.o.... soo irony... any who... he is almost dead!! so i sprinted to the ammo not cloaking... not waiting... he didn't notice me.... but as i examined the scene more closely i noticed...
She was down.... no more could she provide comfort to me, or her boots to him... clinching my teeth knowing that one shot from this braggart would kill me i kept emptying my ammo into him dodging..... left, right, back-flip in the air with a pirouette...
Heart pounding... my clips almost empty.... my sudden and oh so recurring issue where i end up backed into a corner happened...
He approached me.... jackhammer primed...... soo close i could smell the rotting flesh emanating from his teeth and body....
My eyes were getting blurry as i new he would kill me..... then.... as he swung at me.... i emptied my last clip into his skull.....
The jackhammer nail pieced my lung... sat their.... gasping for breath at the now fallen Jackleg Joe.... Knowing.... that if i summoned an evact i would have to ... redo this whole thing....
Banging my head on my sharp edged desk... i looked up.... a trickle of blood dripped down my face as an insane grin spread ear to ear..... suddenly..... finger.... trembling.... i hit E.... and made my merry way through the lands of defiance
That is how you beat him....
