Their character creation was not complete. They put in basic options just for the sake of stress test.

They did this in Rift beta, as the focuses were mainly on bugs and functionality in the beginning.

Once the real beta or beta gets further along, then you will be able to see their normal customization. There will definitely be more options, as Rift gives good variety for character creation as well.

Don't forget this event was only a stress test so all actual in-game stuff people played with can and probably will be changed and with the NDA you are really not supposed to talk about game elements. Plus this was only a stress test not a test of or even a critique of actual game elements.

It doesn't matter if it was a Stress Test or not. For me, if this is the way character customization is going to be structured, then I feel it is a waste of breath even talking about it. It doesn't matter if they add tens of options to each aspect -- The fact that Trion is still relying on finite selections and not a slider system, is disappointing.

This was used in the early days of MMOs , because of technical hurdles. But we have moved way beyond that and yet here we are in 2013 with a game still using preset, graphical options, because of the ease by which current and future graphical updates can be applied to models.

I think the graphics are nice, but if all they are going to do is stick the players with are preset conditions, then all they are doing is towing the line and sticking to what works. It is not worth even putting on the gamebox at this point.

Sliders are still only a finite amount of options. A to B and there's just a bunch if preset points(looks) set in the middle. It's no more than a good standard pick and choose from these options CC. Sliders aren't all that and 99% of the time you won't even be looking at your face.

I think it has to do with the fact that it is a multi-platform game and the customization is only going to be as good as its weakest system can handle. If we assume the "average" gaming computer has a 1 gig or more graphics card and at least 4 gigs of ram compare that to the ps3s 512MB card and 512MB of ram. I'm sure our computers can handle much more customization, but can a ps3 or xbox?

I have to admit that I didn't see the second page either. I thought it was a little too basic, but it was a stress test to me so it didn't really matter :3

Sliders may offer a finite amount of options, but its inherent structure allows for more customization option that presets. It can be as generic as Age of Conan or as robust as ABP. And in this day and age, Trion should be giving us what APB offers us now as opposed to what early MMOs offered us then.

Dont say yet, Rift's character and race customization is so 90s too. I absolutely hate how my face looks exactly like every other in Rift.

But Im totally happy if theres plenty of other kind of customization.

In all reality I think the core reason why they used a finite list is this....YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A HUGE NUMBER OF PLAYERS ON SCREEN ! Have you seen some of the vids that show 75+ running twords a event? I really do think its a good choice unless you want blank head hiccups all over the place even with the current build.

I never had blank head issues even in stress test. So the engine seems very strong.

That said I think they need to bump up the customization... a lot. SWTOR suffered from what many called "limited" character creation. and it is true, I felt very quickly that the options were to few and farbetween, and as for mmo's in 2013 I believe it is very dated to give no advanced options.

APB is still the best character creator, STO has a solid one with tons of options, DCUO's gear customization is pretty great too. While the gameplay in these games is lacking their customization is key. Hell even the steam trailer for APB played off the customization as the main selling point to the game, and it has worked fairly well. We really need new levels of customization in games, the race list for defiance lore is massive... Trion should make use of it.

WTB APB, meets STO, meets DCUO character and gear customization meets Mass Effect 4's new engine meets open world gameplay and mmo level of defiance. *cough* *druels* ...
