I got told about this last night, effectively they have the exact same DRM policy if this is all correct:-

Microsoft first party games won't have DRM and 3rd party developers will have the option.
Sony first party games won't have DRM and 3rd party developers will have the option.

Now the question is if this is true how will it be enforced by Sony?
We know that it will be enforced on the XB1 via the 24hr check in, but what does this mean for the PS4?
Does this mean that 3rd party games will require a 24hr check in? or will they go with Sony patent United States Application US20130007892 which is basically an offline DRM?

"Content is distributed [with] an associated license option on the number of individual consumers or viewers allowed to consume the content. Consumers are presented with a content selection and a choice of licenses allowing consumption of the content," the abstract says. "The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken."

This. Even though it is only in patent form right now, with all the restrictions on used games/borrowing/renting would it surprise anyone if MS came out with licensing that states only 4 people can watch a movie or else they must pay more. And then what next? Once a company has established that it can make more money and that people have accepted what it is putting out, that company will rarely step back in order to terminate unfair consumer practices.

And as a consumer why are people so willing to give up ownership of a game? Would you buy a bed if you could only have one person sleeping on it at a time? Or how about a drill if only two people could use it? Of course not. Everyone would think that company is insane! But because "piracy" and "used games market" (as if there aren't piracy and used markets for clothes, tools, etc. etc.) (piracy being knock offs/generics) then MS can use this poor excuse to restrict games to basically paying to rent and there are consumers who think it's a good idea?!

NO!!! NO NO NO!!! This is pure money making BS! It's simply so that MS can charge publishers more to publish games on their system because they can guarantee that they see money on a greater percentage of sales. This has nothing to do with security, or persistent worlds, or "advanced cloud processing". It is simply a way for MS to take advantage of it's consumer base and MAKE MORE MONEY! That's it. So if you wish to support these anti-consumer practices then at least stop coming up with BS to try and sugar coat it. Yes MS is trying to screw you, I was shocked too, I love the 360 and I loved the Xbox, but unless these restrictions go away (and maybe not even then) I will not buy nor will I ever buy another MS console.

I have been gaming all my life Id like to think I have been loyal to Microsoft Always using there products x box and pc based but this is complete horse ****. They have no right to do this I respect gates charity work but Im sorry he created a monster he created a giant well oiled machine whos only purpose in life is to try make a monopoly of the market and make as much profit from us as they can for little cost to them. For the first time in my life im seriously considering jumping ship even if its only to try hurt them even if its in the smallest possible way.

For me its the fact you cant buy 2nd hand games anymore thats my problem. To buy say 20 games new your looking at around £1000 thats not a fair deal.

Looking everyone's good responses to BOTH sides of the issue I can't help but notice that this HAS become the hot topic about the future of gaming.

To me it boils down to consumer freedom. Yes most games are becoming online focused. Yes my personal systems ARE online. However, why in the heck shouldn't I have the freedom to get my non hardcore single player offline games and be forced to check in just to play it?

Even Forbes had questioned my M$ would make this a point for next gen gamers.

No matter which side of the fence you are on I just personally don't like being corralled like cattle into a certain direction they dictate to me.

Even big studios ARE creating immersive always online worlds they still won't stop producing single player offline games. (God I can't wait for stick of truth)

    *edit*
I'm also enjoy the fact that the community here has kept this a level headed cohesive conversation for the days this thread has continued. Kudos to you ALL!

Don't forget that this happens to the PC years ago...And at the end of the next gen consoles (around 2020).Who will go to a retailer to buy a game...Look how people consume music or movies (downloads,streaming)...This is the end of an era...

You will still be able to buy second hand games.
Both systems will have near identical DRM (First party will have no restriction, 3rd party will be down to the developer. But we only know M$'s enforcment of it and not Son¥'s)
M$ have gone on record that the consumer would not pay any extra fees, however we still don't know Son¥'s full DRM policy or if it will mean extra charges for the consumer.

Or what their process is to achieve that.
Thus far they're stating that you can GIVE a game to a friend by relinquishing it's rights and giving it to them.
Are we just giving up the rights then going to the store to trade it in?

They state you have to be a friend for 30 days in order to give it up.

What they plan to do between selling used and giving/lending to a friend seems to be messed up from a process standpoint for them.

I don't even know why they're putting that burden on themselves from a "The publisher can choose" point of view.

Maybe we all don't completely understand because they've been very un-clear on it.
