well, I don't honestly recall just how far "above" the strato was flying, Or how the terraforming may have altered the "heights" or made the "where it was measured from" much less of a point if much of that is underground/ flooded out.
the real question is how far from the waterline/sea level/ground level does the bridge really extend? and is that the universal rule? About 400'? from ground level? or sea level? before the terraforming, st. louis was already at an altitude of 465. now add about another 400' or so of terraforming... crap, you're already double that supposed 400 feet. so let's say that defiance is 850ft above sea level 400' above that is 1250feet above sea level.
now take san fran. a meagre 52 feet above sea level. sooo.. in theory, that gives the strato approximately 1200 feet of altitude, no?

I agree. but it is sad when there are story arches in the show that deal with this very subject matter and they shut down a thread for the same thing. but hey, its their forum, they can do as they please.

Yeah, would be a travesty to shut down such an important thread. Lol...

you have a solid point. the only thing I question is if Nolan knew the altitude of st. luis. he was a kid when he lived there and is pretty new to the town of defiance...

I doubt he did. and for all I know the terrraforming may have had massive planetary shifts, which caused sea levels to rise, existing ground to sink, thrown all kinds of baselines off.
we just have their statement that in the area of defiance, you get "about" 400' of flying before things get dodgy. to extrapolate that, and impose that over san fran, we need to know three things: 1. what is the current altitude of Defiance? ( best guestimate is that 400' of the arch is now buried in the terraforming, but did the city and surrounding land sink, or was it just covered over?) 2. what is the current altitude of San Fran? 3. the game has shields, where the show does not. shielding may make the difference. cause VBI was based out of the old New York area, I believe...

some interesting conjecture to think about, at any rate. would be better if there were a tighter integration of the history of the show and the Game. supposed to be the same world, but very little in the show has mentioned the near-ubiquitous VBI of the game. and many of the EMC would have known about VBI's goodies.

am still a little sad that there is no real mention of railgun tech, either.. but that's another discussion. =)

The Strato Carriers by name show they fly in the Stratosphere which is 30,000–40,000 ft. The 400 ft ceiling he was talking about is within lowest portion of the Troposphere range also known as the planetary boundary layer (PBL). From what I have heard in the show it would seem the radiation is from debris from the Arkfalls, this would mean the radiation is ground based and localized. I would assume the Strato Carriers can avoid these hot spots using advanced detectors.
Now here's the problem, Nolan said they can't fly "above" 400 ft. So if the radiation is ground based then his statement is flawed. But if the radiation is from the Arks still in orbit, well that brings in a whole other set of errors.
Most likely there is no "400 ft" range and he was drunk, that the radiation is from random locals where Arkfalls have happened and smaller aircraft cannot detect this radiation until it's too late. They have mentioned areas in the badlands they can't go, this again would support the theory.

In the end, this is a syfy show, we have seen sharks with tentacles, giant spiders, and wasps that take over your mind. Science Fiction stories have never had to be scientifically sound, heck even science in general isn't always sound, that's the wonder of discovery. Push the limits of your own imagination and enjoy the ride. Everything else is just eye candy.

Oh lordy a "Yet Another Defiance Inconsistency" (YADY) thread... do NOT get me started.

They really need to come here to St Louis. I think the set design people did (I am sure of it) but the writers just have to stop sometimes and not look on wiki.
