there is no tier, you can web browse, chat, dl, w/e... the only thing you cannot do without plus will be play multiplayer online. Like stated before elsewhere, plus grants multiplayer online, but also throws in a lot of content, free games, and early beta access, as well as early access and discounts on media about to release.

Then why is both Shuhei Yoshida (President of Sony's Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer ) and Jim Ryan (President and CEO Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) talking about the prospects of it, and that the tier system could mean that you can only access certain things at certain tier levels.

only talk, for not it's not a tier concept., and for the launch they said it will likely be the same as now (what they told the group of us at the booth).

and honestly.. the only thing that I can justify charging for would be the multiplayer hosting, it looks good now, and looks fine for the future.

they will most likely make changes if M$ does some changing before launch, to undercut them and remain on top. It's like a flintlock duel atm.. both are waiting as long as possible to see what the other does until the last second.

Son¥ have said a lot of things, that just wasn't quite true in the past (and it seems the same is coming true now.)
However when things that are 'only talk' are being said by company bosses, then there is a very common trend of it becoming reality, more so when it involves making money for their company.
Everyone knows that at the end of the day, companies are there to make money not matter what the consumer says or believes, Son¥ are no different to M$, anyone who believes otherwise is fooling themselves.
And if/when this is implemented we are more then likely going to see (as stated in both interviews) access to steaming, cross game chat and access to Gaikai only being available to those who are at a certain pay point. I.E Gold you have access to online multiplayer gaming, steaming and in game chat, but you can only talk to a friend in another game and utilise Gaikai if you have platinum membership.
But as you say, it may not be in place at launch meaning the booth workers are correct.. However 6 months down the line, it will become active and you will have to pay what ever price they dictate.
