Considering what the Devs have said on the matter and from the basics we have seen as far as the skill tree and loadout slot screen I would say that the whole idea is that you have no "class" and your role is whatever you desighn it to be.
Unlike other MMOs where the healer kinda just sits there waiting for people to need healing and the DPS just attacks over and over again this MMO seems to have the multifacited deal down. You want to be a medic with a LMG...go for it. When people don't need a heal you can lay down some lead and take the damage increasing ability needed to do that. Your squad mate is in the red you run over, heal, then go back to laying down support fire.
It may just be my opp, but I like the ability to be a little more than a standerd class setup MMOs like WOW make you into. Personally I want to be a sniper with the damage increasing ability for PVP and possibly some crowd control (if you assume that there will be some abilities to help nades increase damage and number you can hold).
I wonder if you can change your first choice down the road if your not happy with the perk?

NM, lol anyways you can have different loadouts. It has been said you don't have to keep changing how that one spec is going. You can set up builds and guns in a loadout and switch between them on the fly. So you have a full on heal type set up, a 1/2 heal 1/2 snipe, a rocket/heal witch blur for speed, a sniper/rocket with overcharge(more weapon damage skill), handgun/shotgun with inv. this is with out a loadout for each sub skill you can pick up.
To say you can play how you want to play is the only way to say it.

Good luck or skill a kills a kill, so do everthing you can to win and don't ***** if you lose.

There appears to be A LOT of freedom offered to the player when it comes to weapons loadouts and skill/perk selection.
It also seems like they are flattening the power curve so that newbs can compete and play with veteran characters and not be 100% useless. This also means new content can be available to everyone right off the bat and they won't have to release stuff for a particular power level.
I really like this inclusive style of progression. Advancement is not customization and lateral progression, not just a banal gear/power treadmill like a typical arrpeegee.
