They just made it, Ive played Rift on and off since launch, yeah it remained playable this all time. I actually think only reason thye went F2P was Elder Scroll Online, it probably recovers after ESO too.

So the main storyline is abruptly short? Short as defiance or finish it in a week short
Finish it in about a week if you're not extremely hardcore. I don't even care about the storyline though, it's an MMORPG so they're not known for having the best stories.
My favorite part of Rift is the Instant Adventures. It automatically puts you into a raid group full of other people and teleports you to an ongoing quest-thing that you all work together to complete. Each quest is really quick and then it sends you to the next one. You just keep doing this over and over and you level up really quickly. It reminds me of old SWG group grinding parties on Dantooine.
the main story line takes you all the way to 50, and on occasion will require some friends to help out,, then, it diverges into other SUB storylines that join to reform an expanded main point into and after 60. if following the story it will take you much longer than a week for a normal person. That is not all.. while quests can level you up, you can also level doing pvp, "rift" grinding (where arkfalls for defiance got their idea, a massive kill fest for multiple people) crafting/fishing,. The end game content, as it currently is, is new, and not yet completed by anybody, (will be soon) Iv'e been playing it since before launch as a founder, raiding every other night and everything else in between, and still haven't done it all. There really is alot of content, and rift usually sees new content every 1.5-3 months, much more frequent than WoW.
it was designed by a team of developers who all worked on the various MMOs that came before, so they implimented the best features of all of these, very well I might add, into a single game. you can even see some of the AoC and EQ art styling, some ease of life functions of WoW, and a slew of innovation.
the different ways you can play are really diverse, there is always something to do, and thankfully, it's not nearly as face-roll easy as WoW....
for something that set the bar on graphics and gameplay for an mmorpg, and is now Free to play, it is worth the time to play it, if not check it out.
Haven't seen a better mmorpg come out since this was in beta..
