Bullet for a bad man. About to quit playing.

I have done every mission up to this point. There are literally no more on the map except this one.
I have spent hours trying to complete this thing but not come close, not once, best I've done is about a 5th of his points down.
What gear did people use? How did you handle shooting jake whilst there are other shooters in the area? Best way to handle the shelters?

Use cover to ignore the 2 shooters. Wait till the smelter is just about to spray his fire. Roll straight passed him turn and shoot him in the back. Then line up your shot on jackleg from cover and wait for the smelter to drop his shield. An assault rifle and a shotgun would be an easy loadout for the fight. Shotgun for smelters and ar for jackleg.

A weapon you are comfortable using that is effective at doing a decent amount of damage at mid range.. Then have either Incinerator (detonator) or Northstar Flare (pistol) to light the smelters on fire.. You only need to light the little guys on fire, it doesn't matter how you go about doing that.. The reason I don't recommend a Pyro grenade is due to needing to light the smelters ablaze more often than the CD allows..

As far as shields are concerned, I prefer the Respark Regenerator series.. Resparks have a short delay (2.5-3 seconds) and a moderate recharge speed (40%).. The downside is that the capacity is low (roughly 1000 to 1300 at high ego levels).. The Regenerator suffix can be found on any shield type and can have 25%-75% Health Regeneration bonus.. I heard of 75% bonus regen, but only seen 50% myself.. I also hadn't seen a legendary Respark Regenerator, which most likely will have the reported 75%..

Now onto grenades... I prefer the good old fashion Frag grenades.. More specifically the series mentioned in my sig (Fragblast Std 42W).. They may not have the highest top end damage (generally being a few hundred shy of the hardest hitters), but the minimum damage is close to that of a Cluster-type grenade (again, roughly a couple hundred damage difference) which can be 1500 or so, depending on ego level.. In the end, what grenade you use is entirely up to you.. If the grenade you are already using is working great for you, then use it!

Whenever Mattocks come, take them out ASAP. When a smelter comes, punch him and he'll fall over. Target his napalm tanks with your gun and then Jackleg when his shield pops.

I feel for ya bro. I've been where your at. Let me suggest one thing. SEARCH FUNCTION. There are about 50 or more threads on the boards on how to beat Jackleg Joe. Read all of them and follow their advice and your second post on the fourums will be how you beat Jackleg Joe.
"Look my friend, there are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who can't, any questions?

Yep he can be a tough one for sure, once you get him down off that platform using the little flamethrower dude's to take his shields down you will have brought him to -50 or 60% of his health. The hard part is over! when he starts across the room stay hidden, then move to the other side of the room and hide again. Now he will be working the girl over - big hint - she does not die! pop out of hiding and unload on him - pop back into hiding, he willl shoot at you but qucikly turn back to the girl again if you do not fire at him or show yourself.

Everytime you unload on him he will drop in health a little more and then go down for good, end of story and end of frustation my friend.

Try it like this. Done it 4 times this way and worked every time. http://forums.defiance.com/showthrea...ts-of-pictures)

As has been said there is alot of excellent advice out there, one day it will help me beat him (havent yet, 2 rounds of serious attempts)

For me its not the strategy but the execution that is an issue. I tried using a northstar to light the smelters, but I have a habit of blowing myself up with them. Next time I may try the "punch them then shoot them" method, but as yet my melee skills need alot of work. (praticeing at the crash site in between bolt action kills, still punching air alot)

My issue is I wait till the smelters get too close, then after I tussle with them I am out of position on Jackleg, so I barely land any shots before the shield goes back up. I need more pratice. I just wish it wouldnt reset back to the cutscene when you die. (also would be nice if a big red button marked "kill him" would rise out of the floor after 50 attempts but til then I will keep at it)

    This.

Aside from knowing what your need to basically do, practice is the important bit. A fast shield and a good shotgun are useful, but the most important thing is getting good at playing the game. That's how I finally beat Joe. There's no secret. I just suck less at twitch-gaming than I did when I started playing this game.

Use the pictures and routine described in that link.

Loadout: You will survive best with a respark or Rebel shield type. 3 second or less recharge time is almost a must for San Fran anyway. You'll want a Pyro-nade. You should have received one as a mission reward before this mission, if you don't have one, buy one from somebody. If you attempt this mission without one, then you'll need to have a Northstar Flare, Bonfire Rocket Launcher, Incinerator Detonator, or a reliable mid/long range fire nano weapon.

I've beaten Jackleg four times now. Using the linked above thread's pictures as your guide, here's what I did each time:

    1st kill; Ego 300ish
    VBI Sentinel shield
    0.8 delay pyro-nade
    Derailer Bolt Action
    FRC Scattergun
    Blur w/ escape artist
1st phase, I ran counter clockwise through the map eliminating mattocks with the shotgun (electric nano) at close range. Progressed very quickly to phase two. There's a cut scene where rosa pops a smelter and it tanks down Jackleg's shield. I got behind the fuel tank and head shot Jack three times with the derailer. I stayed behind the tank and my EGO warned me everytime a smelter spawned. I'd pop out and lob a grenade on them and if I was good, it would ignite them and they'd get under jackleg before their hp ticked down to zero. More derailer headshots. Took about 7 cycles and jackleg jumped down. I circled him just like an elite blacklung unloading the shotgun into him. He went down fairly quickly.

    2nd Kill
    EGO 1000ish
    Respark Grenadier III
    0.0 delay Pyronade
    Nolan's AR
    Courier
Decoy/ a lot of the shield recharge perks
I stayed behind the fuel tank until Jackleg jumped down. I used Nolan's AR to kill the mattocks that got far enough forward to spot me. If they bunched up, i swapped to the courier. When the smelters began appearing, pyro grenade on their spawn point and they immediately took down the shield. Nolan's AR with a scope worked great on Jackleg's face. He jumped down after the third smelter. Then it was just circle and spray with the AR.

    3rd Kill
    EGO 1400
    Rebel Regenerator III
    0.0 delay cluster
    Deta Aru
    Bonfire RL
Decoy/ lots of damage resist perks
I stayed behind the fuel tank until Jackleg jumped down. I used my grenade and the pistol to kill the mattocks that got far enough forward to spot me, but I did my best to let Rosa do them. When the smelters began appearing, Bonfire to their spawn point and they immediately took down the shield. The Deta Aru's spread made the fight way too long. He jumped down after the 15th smelter. Then I spent a lot of time reloading and dodging. It was a bit of a pain, but doable. It wasn't as bad as the time I tried a Sawed off load out with fire nano and kept oneshotting the smelters such that i grenaded myself and started over.

    4th Kill
    EGO 2050
    Respark Regenerator IV
    Immunizer
    Ground Pounder
    0.0 Delay Pyro-nade
Cloak/ random perks, did have in the trenches up though
Was probably the easiest fight. Stayed behind the tank, used the immunizer to kill any Mattock that approached. Was only one case where some elites bunched and I used the ground pounder to teach them tactics. when the smelters began appearing, grenade on their spawn point sent them running and tookt he shield down. The immunizer worked really well. Jackleg kept taking damage behind his shield. He came down after the third smelter. Then I GroPo'd him to death in about 45 seconds.
