I'm not Phoenix, but I'd say that yes it's possible. I would check for other possible culprits though too (if for no other reason than to rule them out). Make sure your drivers (especially graphics cards) are up to date, the usual basics. Also see if it happens with other games, or does it happen after several minutes of game play (possibly a heat issue).
If nothing else causes the problem and all of your drivers are up to date I'd make sure to report it to the developers, they may want info to see what is causing it. You may not be the only person with the issue.
Edit: Oh and you may want to check the game's settings (especially for graphics) some setting in some games can cause system crashes. Try turning down some of the unnecessary settings. For example having Physx enabled in Borderlands 2 can cause crashes and freezes for some people.
