To help capture some of the excitement of Arkfall events, IGN has teamed-up with Trion Worlds and Syfy to scatter three, unique Arkfall codes around this website, which will be unveiled for you to hunt down over the next two weeks, released on the 18th, 22nd and 28th of March. Find the codes and the treasures of the Arkfall could be yours.

Launching on 2 April, Defiance offers a unique, trans-media opportunity to experience the strong science-fiction narrative of a Syfy TV show, alongside Trion Worlds' online open-world third-person-shooter. As both develop, the game will reflect significant world-events depicted in the TV series, while the actions of players in Trion Worlds' game will inform plot points of future series' of Syfy's TV show.

So is this saying that the 3 codes they are releasing will have unique loot un associated with the ego system or what?

by "unique" they prolly meant that those codes have not been published anywhere else

I agree. I believe this means that they have 3 arkfall codes of our 120 to hide at IGN, that is for IGN to hide, by IGN to hide. Anything in the past has been by Trion or by DefianceGame to hide at IGN, like the one in the Defiance Banner from a couple months ago.
