The MMO Thread, Care to join me?

So I have been wanting to make an MMO thread for awhile, to discuss what is an MMO to you? What is an example of a great MMO and a not so great MMO. What works, what doesnt? What features do you enjoy most in said MMO's.

For me, its games like WoW. Big worlds to explore, fun dungeons, interesting story. Everything about MMO's however make me happy, except having to always be online but thats the only draw back for me. I do love player housing, and this raises my question to you all.

The Elder Scrolls is known for you having the ability to own your own house, So what about The Elder Scrolls Online? Player housing maybe? Give me your thoughts!

This is my new favorite thread!

Examples of great MMOs to me would have to be Star Wars Galaxies. Huuuuge world, it was actually many different worlds. I absolutely loved the player run economy, in-depth crafting, player housing and even player cities! CITIES! Your guild could work together to build an entire city. You choose the layout, build the buildings, even build things like guild halls, shuttleports, and malls! Things like this really made it feel like you had a virtual life, and not just playing some video game. And then of course the actual gameplay was great too. You weren't restricted to one class, and could learn whatever you wanted. It had a lot more depth than any other game I've ever seen.

Another great, but very different, example would be Lord of the Rings Online. Now, it didn't have nearly as much depth as SWG, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. It also had Player Housing, but it wasn't all that great. But hey, it's better than not having it at all! What I liked most about LotRO was the storytelling. Just questing by myself was very peaceful, and you'd do these Main quests that usually had you going into solo instances kinda like in Defiance except they did a really good job introducing you to characters and it told the story in a way much better than just text quest logs.

Obviously, Player Housing is my favorite feature, and I will play any game, no matter how awful, if it has Player Housing. I can't wait for WildStar, as the Player Housing is at the very core of the game and everything else is built around it!

I haven't heard anything about Elder Scrolls Online having Player Housing, although it would fit. Maybe in a DLC or Expansion? Which method are they going anyways?

ArcheAge is another game coming out soon with Player Housing. So far it's the largest Sandbox MMO ever made, although EverQuest Next wants to beat it. It's already very popular in the Asian markets and it's finally coming to the English market. Guess who's publishing it for the English market? TRION!

    Great thread.

I always ask myself when these threads pop up, why does FinalFantasy XI always get left out when people, especially in NA, talk about MMOs...

Absolutely epic game in scale, depth, fun factor, grind factor (for sure), team based play, content, staying power (almost at the 10 year mark in NA, past in JP)..... etc.

I enjoyed that game, but most other people don't even know about it. And yeah it was extremely grindy. Will you be playing FFXIV: A Realm Reborn with the rest of us?

It is a remake of the original FF14, remade by a new team, in a new direction. But its still 14 in a sense. Another thing i'd like to say, I love to quest during night time in MMO's, Not real time night time, although that helps. I prefer to play games with day/night cycles, and quest at night. Especially in games, again, like WoW that had a real time night time cycle, So i could game through the night hours, Night time in MMO's are just prettier for me.

Also like Mal said, I am getting Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn with everyone else, infact i might be the one next to shimo who is most excited for it. Just 2 months away.

It's a brand new game. Completely redesigned. It's gonna have shared servers between PC and PS3, so almost all of us Off Topic regulars are getting it. It comes out in August and I believe there's a Beta Weekend coming up this weekend. I'll find out how to get keys for everybody and let you all know.

And Jack - I agree, I like games with day/night cycles. I just prefer Daytime more. Night is fun, but I dunno I always liked Daytime more.

See, I love opinions, I love how people like different things and MMO's can deliver so much difference for so many. Now here is another thing I enjoy, when Daytime or Nighttime have different monsters, or spawns compared to the opposite.

ANother thing of note, is I love events. Halloween being my favorite event in any game ever, its just fun to celebrate that stuff in game. I hope FF14 has that, I dont know if 11 did i never got to play it..

Ah I love events! But only if they actually DO something for the event, and not just some stupid tiny decorations. I like to be able to actually participate in holiday events. WoW does a very good job of holidays.
