Am I the only one who stinks at this game?

I do love this game. It isn't like the EQ style MMO's with the Holy Trinity thing and doesn't have the standard features like an AH, mail, etc but then again ... its a completely different beast. I find it humorous when people plead for something different and when they get it, complain that it doesn't have the old stuff in it, but MMO forums are all about the hate. Always have been.

To me, this game is addicting and a welcome break from WoW. A VERY welcome break.

Now, I haven't played a shooter in quite a while ... more than 15 years to be exact. I've played many MMORPG's however but the skills don't transfer. The bottom line here is that I die a lot.

I guess I do the old "Run and Gun" thing and while I eventually finish the mission, I rarely ever do one without getting killed at least once. I figure that if i keep at it I'll eventually get better and I was just wondering if anyone else out there dies as often as me!

I think my death to life ratio is something like 15 times dead for every 1 time I survive to the end of a mission. It may be higher if I were to add the self revives in. I know it would be.

But despite that, I still enjoy the game.
I consider it "Mindless" fun, because there is very little thinking involved in picking EGO skills or weapons. You just log on, find an ark fall/emergencies/missions, and start blasting away at the "bad" guys.

Granted PvP may take a tad more thinking, but it's not as involved as WOW or Rift.
I find it relaxing to play an MMO where I don't have to worry so much about "skills" and instead just worry about running outta ammo

Only tip I can give you is to run and gun when you're getting swarmed, but take the time to aim if you're not taking so much damage.
    Aim, burst, run if needed.

Always as your shield breaks, or just a bit before. Barrel rolling will help you.

Otherwise everything else is skill, so you will get better over time, but experiment with different weapons as the ones you're using may not be sufficient to your play style. For example, my friend says I'm good at shooters but for the life of me I cannot shoot things with a sniper in this game so I avoid them entirely.

If dying is frequent with you, do try hide behind things. Even trees if need be. Wait for your shield to regenerate. If it breaks you do not want to continue fighting; and it should be pretty obvious when your shield breaks.

I am sure better twitch skills would assist me. But I just go somewhere, shoot and die or shoot and win, eventually. Twitch skill is all you really need to progress. Working the numerous screens is trial and error and u need a good memory for those. Still do not know how to craft - may be easy but I got bored and a little frustrated after a few 'levels'. Mostly a shooter grind, at least for me. Equipment is the leveling (equipment + power level). That is what damaged SWTOR.

I was also looking forward to the show and its game tie in (bought the game prepackage, hunted ark codes) but was intensely unhappy that the show was just a soap opera sprinkled with sci-fiey - well sprinkles. Nice show but when I missed an episode it just didn't bother me. This is not a rant or ragequit, just thought I would state what happened to me with this game.

I get tunnel vision and focus on a specific aspect.
Then I forget that I have my EGO superpower, and 'nades.

I had to practice my 'situational awareness' strategy, so I dint forget to look for flankers, or red dots that materialized behind me in a cleared area.

Knowing the types of missions you expect, and prepping a loadout for different situations/missions can be useful if you put the time in to hone it, along with tweaking the perks that compliment it. Don't forget that changing a weapon class in a loadout can necessitate re-thinking the perks you have in that loadout.

Know when to swap weapons rather than making do with the one you happen to have in your mitts.

Sometimes you just have to swap a loadout in a firefight for that sniper and 2 shots and than swap back. Try to practice it for when you need it, and evaluate when you HAVE to do it.

Know when to do a tactical reload and when to duck behind something to reassess a situation.

I still die a lot, I just try to make it worthwhile. I get insulted when I do something stupid and the raiders stand around me hammering my corpse.
    These are just my opinions.
    I have lots of opinions.
Some of them, on occasion, people have agreed with.
I do not trust those people.

I also suck hard at this game... im not overly fond of FPS, and i bought this game out of a love of the TV show, and from what i read it sounded like more like MMO then FPS. I am enjoying the game, even though i suck and dont care for FPS, so ill get my money worth out of it.

However, I do with we had some more MMO cross overs, AH, more intuitive chat, and even a bit of that dreaded "trinity" having healers and a tanks allows a DPS minded person cut lose a bit more.

Im still pretty new so i havent gotten into all the features, but at the moment nothing really pulls me into this game other than the love of the story from the show. Who knows perhaps something will.

I got really lucky and invited to do Alpha, way back when. It's a good thing, because my twitch skills were nill and I spent the better part of 2 weeks running around in Mount Tam, just shooting, learning how to duck, use grenades, which weapons I liked best, etc. After that, I explored the rest of the map and tried to develop better tactics on harder enemies like 99ers, dark matter, etc. And *then* I started doing the main story line which wasn't as hard as it would have been right off the bat.

So, no, you're not the only one. As it stands now, I'm EGO 2230, done all the main missions, 2/3 of the sides and claim first at ark falls and sieges quite a bit, so .. It just takes a little practice and patience. Running with other people will also boost your confidence while showing you what other people are doing.
