Thats why i stopped playing on PvP servers in WoW, getting ganked is tedious as hell.
    Agree, but...

There's -always- a solution. You can be more careful. Have escape options. Call in friends. If all else fails, change locations. Yes, it takes more effort, but it's also more -fun-.

Anyway, we'll see what's available. For all we know, there won't -be- any sort of PvP ruleset variant.
Agree with 80% more erections. PvE just gets blah. Plus, with as many of us that will be playing we'll have our own practical little army. We'll always have suckaz with bloodlust ready to come back us up. On top of that, we can help and/or exploit new players, offering safe passage, blah blah blah. I DOUBT FF XIV will have a world PvP system anyway - can anyone who's played correct me?

With as much as we're coordinating jobs and such, too, we'll be nigh unstoppable. Bahamut himself will weep at our presence, and Moogles will rejoice at having their heroes near.
Hell no, I don't want to go get some fries.

Again, it's a difference of perspectives. I doubt I'll change your mind, and you'll never change mine. I don't want to quest "all relaxed and peaceful." I get a kick out of the incessant threat of ambush, and the skirmishes that follow. PvE can get pretty monotonous. A little PvP action (especially when it's spontaneous) can really spice things up. You're not a PvPer, I get that. Your statement that "most games don't have a reason to be on a pvp server" gives it away. A reason? Dude. PvP IS the reason. PvP IS the reward. It's not about chasing an artificial carrot.

I've tried both rulesets countless times. Whenever I play on a PvE server (assuming a PvP variant is available), I always get the sense that there's...something missing.
No I'm a HUUUUUGE PvPer. That's my favorite thing part of any MMO (except for Player Housing, that feature beats anything). But I like COMPETITIVE PvP. I don't like stomping on some noob who's 10 levels lower than me. I don't even like stomping on some player that's the same level, but undergeared. If it's not a fair fight, then I can't be proud of myself, except for being proud that I spent more time playing the game than he did (which does count, but not as much as a fair fight).

I love all out huge PvP wars in big zones. I love calling out people on forums and becoming infamous. But players don't ever do world PvP like that anymore. So anybody looking for those "glory days" of world PvP are going to go out into a zone, and find nobody to fight except for noobs who get stomped too easily. I've leveled up in many different games on many different PvP servers, and the only times that I'd ever see enemy players is when I was getting ganked. I barely ever see enemies the same level as me.

When I said there's no reason to be in world PvP I meant that there's no objectives to complete. I like structured PvP way more. Give me objectives to complete. Give me forts to defend. Don't just throw me into a zone all by myself with some ******* who's 20 levels higher than me that comes swooping down on a flying mount and one shots me. That is not PvP. That is ******baggery.

If PvP servers worked the way they did back in vanilla WoW with big epic battles that were fair on both sides, then I'd be super into it and I'd never play on a PvE server. But, unfortunately, they just don't work that way.

That is something else to point out, you know how hard it is to level up your profession stuff on a PvP server? Unless the mini-game woodcutting ect ect takes you out of combat, then that would be okay. The penalty in this game for dying is pretty harsh however, so there is that.

I have turned using the environment to hide for an afk into an art form. You're not gonna find me in the middle of an open field, standing afk next to the corpse of whatever I just killed. I may be afk, but up a tree, in a bush, attached to the bottom of your car, etc. xD or in some other remote/hidden part of the area. Rarely do I get ganked while afk. Plus, you can always enter a sanctuary. My instinct tells me, if a PvP ruleset is implemented in any way in FFXIV:ARR, sanctuaries and PvP counters will be plentiful. Again, to each his own. I personally believe that constantly playing in a PvP environment has made me not only a better PvPer, but a better PvE'er as well. You're forced to think on your feet, often using untraditional methods. Also, it's a metric #$*& ton of fun.

It's more harsh than the normal MMO. But dude...NOTHING is harsh compared to Pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies Jedis. Oh you finally unlocked Jedi? IF YOU DIE YOUR CHARACTER STAYS DEAD FOREVER! O.O

Reminds me of Closed Hardcore on Diablo 2 If you die once, your character stays dead 4 evaz. PvP in THAT way, is fun as hell. The tension is harsh lol.

I was a grandmaster swordsman and healer in Ultima Online before players were babied by World of Wienercraft. Yes, I know, and fought dragons WHILST decimating player-killers.

Yep. Jedis had it hard. You were always flagged for PvP. There were NO safe zones for you, and player Bounty Hunters could get bounties for you and track you down. They could even team up to take you down. I don't know how many times I got jumped in a city just browsing the AH. Luckily though Jedis at the time were crazy overpowered.

You make some good points here.

I can count all the greys I've killed in 10+ years of PvP on both hands. I have friends who gank tons of lowbies. I try not to judge, but it's never appealed to me. Unless you're within 5 levels of me, you get a pass (unless you do something really stupid, like repeatedly gank one of my friends/guildies, grief in some other way, etc). I do, however, like to go after the gankers. If I hear of someone ganking friendly lowbies, it' go time. xD

I also wish there was more incentive and general reinforcement of world pvp situations.

And keep in mind, being on an open PvP server doesn't mean you attack EVERYONE within 5 levels. You still have a choice. And so do they. That too, makes it really interesting.

So is heavenly sword going PvP server then Steve? 'Cause me and Mal are going PvE, So atleast if any of the group wants to go to either side they have options so it does work out pretty well honestly.
