Wouldn't it make more sense the other way around? First get people interested in the world.. Then let them play in it? Oh well.

I think they're purposefully trying to avoid the the "based on a TV/Movie therefore sucks" stigma so releasing the game first is a priority. Also the game is a much harder sell, i only have to turn on my TV to tune into Defiance the show. I have to purchase the game (and possibly a system) to enjoy Defiance the game.
Syfy has an audience for the show already, the game hopes to draw off of that audience as well as have the average gamer. The early release is more so catering to the gamer audience.
Also Syfy execs probably control the release date and this is how they want it.
Edit: Also like alienoid mentioned and i said previously it will help with immersion into the universe.
I suppose that makes sense.. Still, it makes the game feel like a major rush job. And I doubt I'll be in the zone before the show airs. :P Not that it'll ever air here, because well.. No SyFy. But still. (So in my case, I don't give a hoot about the show and its release plan. Just want a solid game, can understand their philosophy behind it now though)
Not sure why folks ask for no wiping of characters after the beta is over. You'll still be able to unlock everything you did once release comes and more. Just about 99% of every beta test I have done for online games wipe before release.
I don't doubt it has that rushed feel or that Trion felt the rushed pressure but from what i have played the core mechanics are pretty solid and so long they keep on top of the communities requests (like changing the chat window) then the game will be a solid release.
I do hope they understand that each method of playing (PC, PS3, 360) are all different beasts and devote different teams/resources to changing things for each individual console while keeping the core game the same. The games for each system will hopefully evolve organically to suit each communities needs while not compromising the core game as whole for any one system.
I find it very shallow, and lacking in regards to the AI, the UI glitching out on me and the chat just plain malfunctioning. Not to mention the horrid aim assist stopping me from aiming what I want to aim at, it follows the dude in the foreground instead of the far-away baddie I want to snipe down. It doesn't feel quite ready for release.
And while I'm positive it'll turn out just fine, after a few patches after launch.. I can't help but feel they're pushing it out a month or two early.
Word of advice for the future, buddy. You never play betas with the expectations of keeping everything. 99% of betas will always wipe and it's been like that for YEARS. In gaming-years, that's like, forever.
You never go full-enthusiasm during betas. Save yourself some heartbreak.
Also, the first year or two after launch is, make no mistake, still a beta. Server downtime, exploits, rollbacks, hindsight, missing launch features promised to be put in at a later date/sold to you, polishing and more polishing, etc. Surprise!
Were you surprised?
I bet you were surprised.
I can't say i experience similar problems so therefore perhaps why i have different opinion. I will note aim assist can be turned off in the options though. As for the rest of it, yes, bugs in the UI, and AI definitely need some work however compared to many games the AI can be difficult & dare i say rather intelligent at times. Fortunately things like this are easily tweakable and from my understanding the beta's we've been playing are not the most recent builds.
And also maybe i'm a little biased but i actually purchased The War Z so seeing a legitimate game and seeing it actually functioning is causing me to give it more than the deserved praise.
Every game could use more time, but in its current state assuming bugs we mentioned and then some are corrected in the launch build then i'd say its in an acceptable release state. I think Trion is the kind of company that polishes its games after its initial release where is some like Arenanet focused a lot on polishing it prior to release.
Oh? The aim assist option is new to me. I'll look for that at launch.
As for the game itself, as I said I am certain it'll turn out just fine. Just a little worried about the way it is now, and whether or not it will retain players in a proper way.
